In the past four to five years Nigerian pop superstars Wizkid and Davido have been the biggest music stars in Nigeria and by a large extension Africa. The music industry seems to be a duopoly between this two music stars, and within these years Wizkid or Davido can be placed on the number one or two spot interchangeably. Furthermore, within these past years they have won awards as ‘Artist of the Year’ on the local scene and have earned two BET Awards each as ‘Best International Act: Africa’. Nobody really seems to come close to achieving their numerous feats in the past years. Everyone is basically groping behind the huge shadow cast by these Nigeria’s biggest music export in contemporary times. In their class only Olamide comes close but there the problem lies, the Bariga born rapper cum singer isn’t really on an international wave, at least not yet.
Somehow, new artists spring of within these years and they are immediately tipped off to take after the likes of Wizkid or Davido but they always leave much to be desired. One of those talented music stars are Kizz Daniel and Reekado Banks.
Since they surfaced on the block, they have enjoyed a fair share of what the Nigerian music industry has to offer in terms of fame and fortune. Above all former G-Worldwide act Oluwatobiloba Daniel Anidugbe aka Kizz Daniel and Mavin Records Ayoleyi Hanniel Solomon better known as Reekado Banks seemed like the favourites to catch up with the doings of the Starboy and OBO. At this point, unfortunately both of them combined pose no shred of threat to neither Wizkid nor Davido. After putting out their debut albums and a couple of other singles it seem Reeky and boy Kizz need to double up in their efforts to command a ton of influence like OBO or Starboy.
Somehow they have failed to enter the superstar status largely because of the following:
1. No Cross continental Hits: The biggest divider between Wizkid x Davido and Kizz Daniel x Reekado Banks is that they have no cross continental hit records like the former. No doubts they have scored some hits largely around the Nigerian market but beyond Nigeria their songs aren’t as big to command a continental influence. Name a song from either Kizz or Reeky that has a huge international appeal, I’ll wait.
2. Beside Music They Offer No Lifestyle: Wizkid and Davido are the biggest sellers of controversies in the Nigerian music industry as it stance. They offer the lifestyles that keeps fans engaged on social media and make the biggest headlines too. Meanwhile besides music, Reeky and boy Kizz offer nothing special to look forward to. Apart from record label battle with Kizz Daniel & cheeky cocky talks from Reekado Banks they rarely make news headlines.
3. The lack guts to seek international appeal: Everyone by now knows Wizkid isn’t a local champion neither is Davido struggling on the international stage. One thing about these superstars is the guts to do what has never been done by elders and peers, their international hustle is tight. You can’t say the same for Kizz Daniel or Reekado Banks they look very complacent at the moment. Going international goes beyond singing with a handful of non-Nigerian artistes.
4. Weak Branding Game: Both Kizz Daniel and Reekado Banks have failed to create a solid brand image for themselves. Their branding game is weak compared to the two superstars. Apart from his stage name Davido is known for a lot of other things and different aliases, OBO, 30BG etc. Did you also hear ‘Cheee’ in the background? Wizkid is also known widely as Starboy up to a point we like to think The Weeknd tried to steal ‘Starboy’ from him. Hardly do we have a strong alias for Reekado Banks or Kizz Daniel no signature sound, dress code or something that quickly brings them to mind. Some of the reasons they can’t be accorded the superstar status yet.
With new EP and album from Reekado Banks and Kizz Daniel we wonder if they can firstly give us hits that would have Sony or Universal Music look their way?
Would they take on new strength and strategy to enter the international limelight?
Would we see them sell out big arenas anytime soon?
